The DEFCON Volunteer Program
DEFCON Volunteers are AFGE activists who have an interest in building the union membership in our DOD locals and are willing to volunteer their time to assist other locals who need help. By volunteering, DEFCON covers the cost of your travel, hotel, and per diem. DEFCON does not compensate for lost time (volunteer means volunteer). OI and DoD Boot Camp graduates are encouraged to join the ranks of the DEFCON Volunteers.
How it works – interested activists submit their name and email address to Mark Gibson at gibsom@afge.org to add their name to the list. When requests are received asking for volunteers, we email those volunteers on the list asking of their interest and availability. There is no obligation to respond or to commit to any event.
Volunteers responding that they are interested and available respond to the email notice asking for volunteers. Generally, volunteers are taken on a first come, first serve basis until we meet the desired number of volunteers needed to support the events.
In 2010, DEFCON supported over 60 weeks of volunteer travel helping locals build our union.
